Brussels (dpa) - Britain began its one-year countdown to the day it leaves the European Union. Both sides have clear - yet conflicting - ideas on what the future trading relationship could look like, as they prepare to open this chapter of negotiations.

- British Prime Minister Theresa May marked the ONE-YEAR COUNTDOWN on Thursday with a tour of Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales to share her "ambitious" vision of a future in which Britain can "trade freely with friends and partners in Europe and beyond."

- Meanwhile, former German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble expressed hope that Britain may RETHINK ITS DECISION to leave the EU following a strong show of support by member states over the nerve agent attack in Britain on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

- This week, 18 EU member states joined Britain in EXPELLING RUSSIAN DIPLOMATS over the Skripal affair, after EU leaders said they shared London‘s assessment that Moscow was most likely behind the attack.

- On Wednesday, German industry representatives said they need CLARITY BY OCTOBER on Britain‘s future trade relationship with the EU, warning that it could otherwise disrupt production schedules.
