BACKGROUND THIS WEEK in Brexit: British parties publish election manifestos

By our dpa-correspondent and Europe Online    auf Facebook posten  Auf Twitter posten
London (dpa) - The main parties contesting Britain‘s general election on June 8 published their campaign manifestos this week, with some very different ideas on what Brexit should look like or even whether it should go ahead at all.

- Launching the CONSERVATIVE manifesto, Prime Minister Theresa May said Britain needs "a strong and stable government to get the best Brexit deal ... [and] make the most of the opportunities Brexit brings for hardworking families."

May said Britain will leave the EU single market and will "not seek to be HALF IN, HALF OUT" of the EU. She argued that "no deal is better than a bad deal" for Britain.

- The biggest opposition party, LABOUR, said it accepts the result of last June‘s Brexit referendum, but rejects May‘s "reckless approach" to leaving the EU.

It said it would "prioritize jobs and living standards" and "give a meaningful role to PARLIAMENT throughout negotiations."

- The much smaller LIBERAL DEMOCRATS, with only eight seats in the last parliament, take the most radical approach, calling for a second referendum on Brexit.

"We passionately believe that Britain is BETTER OFF in the EU," the LibDems said.

- Meanwhile, gaffe-prone Foreign Secretary BORIS JOHNSON - one of three senior ministers expected to lead Britain in the negotiations - stirred up another controversy on the election campaign trail.

During a visit to a Sikh temple, Johnson, sporting an orange turban, discussed the government‘s plan to sell more WHISKY to India as part of a post-Brexit export drive to non-EU nations. He apologized after an angry woman confronted him, saying: "How dare you talk about alcohol in a Sikh temple?"
