BACKGROUND The trio of agribusiness mega-mergers approved by the EU since 2017

Brussels (dpa) - By allowing a merger between German pharmaceutical giant Bayer and US agrochemical company Monsanto on Wednesday, the European Commission has approved a total of three agribusiness mergers since 2017, which are set to reshape the industry.

"That‘s a lot of change in a short time," European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said on Wednesday. "But our European merger control has made sure that none of these mergers have resulted in less competition ... in Europe."

Here are the three mega-mergers:

BAYER - MONSANTO

The commission approved the merger on Wednesday under strict conditions.

The more than 60-billion-dollar acquisition, which still needs to be approved by US regulators, would create the world‘s largest integrated pesticides and seeds company.

The greenlight was given after the two companies offered remedies totalling more than 6 billion euros (7.4 billion dollars) to address competition concerns, including existing overlap in the seed and pesticide markets and research and development of seeds and traits.

DOW - DUPONT

On March 27, 2017, the commission approved the merger of US-based chemical companies Dow and DuPont, estimated to be worth 130 billion dollars.

The approval was conditional on the sale of major parts of DuPont‘s global pesticide business, including its research and development branch.

Dow and Dupont publicized their merger plans in late 2015. Together they have nearly 110,000 employees.

SYNGENTA - CHEMCHINA

On April 5, 2017, the EU approved the takeover of the Swiss seed and chemical company Syngenta by the state-owned Chinese group ChemChina, estimated to be worth 43 billion dollars.

Vetager said at the time that the approval was conditional on the sale of a significant part of ChemChina‘s existing pesticide business, as well as some of Syngenta‘s pesticides parts.
