BACKGROUND Russia's RT, state-funded news outlet focusing on foreign audiences

Moscow (dpa) - Russia Today, which insists on being called RT, is a government-funded news outlet focusing on foreign audiences, much like US-funded Voice of America.

RT, which has services in several languages including English, was set up in 2005 to broadcast domestic and international news from a Russian perspective.

Four years later it rebranded itself as the acronym RT, reflecting its growing focus on international news.

The company‘s management shrugged off speculation that the measure was designed to cover up its source of funding: the Russian government.

RT has built up a broad presence in the United States, marketing itself as an alternative to the mainstream media.

The network has been successful enough for US officials to accuse it of influencing last year‘s US presidential election to benefit the winning candidate, Donald Trump.

During his campaign, Trump expressed personal admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and pledged to mend the frayed ties between the two world powers.

Contacts between members of Trump‘s campaign and Russia are currently a subject of investigations by both the US Congress and the FBI.

The US Justice Department confirmed on Monday that RT had registered as a foreign agent in the country.

The confirmation came after RT chief editor Margarita Simonyan said US authorities had threatened to arrest the head of the company‘s US operations if it failed to register.
