BACKGROUND Russian athletes participating in Rio Olympic Game by federation

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The IOC said Sunday that 278 Russians are currently listed to compete at the Rio Games after being approved.

In all, Russia had listed 389 athletes, but the track and field team has been banned apart from long jumper Darya Klishina by the ruling body IAAF, and the IOC then also denied 43 others a place in Rio.

Russian athletes at the Rio Games, according to a list provided by the IOC:

AQUATICS (67): World champion pool swimmer Yulia Efimova the last to join the team after a successful appeal before CAS. Six others were deemed ineligible.

ARCHERY (3): All three qualified Russians can take part.

ATHLETICS (1) The world governing body IAAF issued a blanket ban on the Russian team with the exception of US-based long jumper Darya Klishna.

BADMINTON (4): All four qualified Russians can take part.

BASKETBALL (0): The Russians teams did not qualify.

BOXING (11): All 11 qualified Russians can take part.

CANOEING (13): There are 13 Russians who can take part but six others are banned having been implicated in the McLaren report including Olympic champion Alexander Dyachenko.

CYCLING (12): There are 12 Russians taking part with three suspended. Others were later cleared but with insufficient time to compete.

EQUESTRIAN(5): All five qualified Russians can take part.

FENCING (16): All 16 qualified Russians can take part.

FOOTBALL (0): The Russian teams did not qualify.

GOLF (1): The only qualified Russian, Maria Verchenova, can take part.

GYMNASTICS (20): The international gymnastics federation says 20 Russians, including Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina, are eligible to take part.

HANDBALL (14): The 14-strong Russian women‘s team can take part. The men did not qualify.

HOCKEY (0): The Russians teams did not qualify.

JUDO (12): All 12 qualified Russians can take part.

MODERN PENTATHLON (3): Maxim Kustov is banned but three other qualified athletes will take part.

ROWING (4): Only four Russian athletes will take part in Rio out of an original team of 28.

SAILING (7): All seven qualified Russians can take part.

SHOOTING (18): All 18 qualified Russians can take part.

TENNIS (8): All eight qualified Russians can take part. Maria Sharapova is suspended having tested positive for Meldonium earlier in the year.

TAEKWONDO (3): All three qualified Russians can take part.

TABLE TENNIS (3): All three qualified Russians can take part.

TRIATHLON (6): All six qualified Russians can take part.

VOLLEYBALL (30): All qualified Russian teams in indoor and beach volleyball can take part, featuring 30 athletes overall.

WEIGHTLIFTING (0): The world governing body IWF issued a blanket ban on the Russian team. Some athletes are appealing to the CAS.

WRESTLING (16): There are 16 Russians deemed eligible with the final qualified wrestler, Viktor Lebedev, still hoping to attend by winning his case at the CAS.
