Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The first Olympics held in South America take place in Rio de Janeiro in August. The numbers behind the Games:

306: gold medals, 136 for women, 161 for men, 9 mixed.

10,500: athletes from 206 countries will gather in Rio.

3,200: referees and assistants will oversee the competitions.

38.7 billion: the cost of the Games in Reais (10.96 billion dollars).

45,000: people will volunteer at the Games.

85,000: security personnel in attendance, up from 42,000 in London.

6.5 million: the population of Rio, including surroundings it is 12.2 million.

763: favelas - over 20 per cent of the population lives here.

24: number of beaches in Rio. The best-known is the Copacabana.

33,000: number of taxis in Rio, that are often stuck in traffic jams.

1,202: murders in Rio in 2015, the lowest since 1991.

396: height of Sugarloaf mountain in metres.
