Brussels (dpa) - There is one year to go until Britain leaves the European Union at 11 pm London time (2300 GMT) on March 29, 2019. A lot of details remain to be resolved, however.

Here are some of the key dates ahead:

APRIL 2018: Brussels and London will begin talks on the future trade relationship after EU leaders gave the bloc‘s chief negotiator Michel Barnier a mandate to seek a "balanced, ambitious and wide-ranging" free trade deal.

JUNE 2018: EU leaders review progress on all outstanding issues, including a solution to prevent a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, at their regular June summit.

OCTOBER 2018: Target date to finalize the withdrawal agreement laying out Britain‘s divorce terms from the EU, which will include the details of a 21-month transition period during which EU rules will continue to apply in Britain. The aim is also to agree on the outlines of the future relationship by this stage.

NOVEMBER 2018 - MARCH 2019: British and EU parliaments ratify the withdrawal treaty, including the transition deal.

MARCH 29, 2019: Britain formally leaves the EU and the transition phase should kick in. During this period, Britain must abide by EU rules, pay into EU budgets and accept EU legal oversight, without having any say in EU decision-making procedures.

FROM MARCH 30, 2019: Britain can only formally strike a trade deal with the EU once it has left the bloc. From this date on trade deals with other countries around the world can also enter into effect.

JANUARY 1, 2021: Britain exits its transitional arrangements with the EU and enters into a new trading and political relationship with the bloc.
