Lima (dpa) - Short profile of Olympic hosts Paris (2024) and Los Angeles (2028).

PARIS 2024

Population: 2.2 million, greater Paris area 10 million. 

Previous Games: 1900, 1924. 

Budget: Paris plans with a budget of 7.4 billion euros, with 70 per cent of the veunes existing and most others to be temporary venues. Centre of Games in central Paris and nearby Saint-Denis.

Positives: Games in the heart of the city, cycling on the Champs-Elysees, beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, tennis at Roland Garros, venues along the Seine river.

Distances: 80 per cent of the venues within 10km of the Olympic Village; 85 per cent of the athletes to reach their venues within half an hour. Only sailing far away in Marseille.

Concerns: Terror threat could loom over Games after several attacks in which the Stade de France was also a target.

Olympic stadium: Stade de France, capacity 80,000 Zuschauer, built for the 1998 football World Cup, to host ceremonies and athletics. Thhe Olympic Stadium from 1924, the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, to be used for field hockey.

Olympic Village: Cite du Cinema in Saint-Denis, for 17,000 visitors; 11km from city centre, 3km from Olympic Stadium; 2.5km from swim stadium

LOS ANGELES 2028

Population: 4 million, greater Los Angeles area 16.9 million  

Previous Games: 1932, 1984.

Budget: Los Angeles has a planned budget of 5.3 billion dollars, all expenditures to come from sponsors and ticket sales.

Positives: Like Paris, extensive use of existing venues and temporary venues for sports including cycling and equestrian.

Distances: All venues in four clusters to be reached within 40 minutes from Olympic Village.

Concerns: 11 years until the Games is a long time, current ethusiasm could wane depending on political and economic situation.

Olympic Stadium: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, 90,000 capacity, also used for 1932 and 1884 Games. To host ceremonies and athletics.

Olympic Village: To be constructed new part of University of California campus which also housed athletes in 1984. The campus offers training facilities at Olympics for athletics, swimming and tennis.
