Berlin (dpa) - The German car industry, which has been struggling to emerge from a long-running emissions scandal, is now facing accusations that it was part of a secret auto industry cartel, as well as threats of further restrictions on diesel cars.

The auto sector is one of the heavyweights of the nation‘s manufacturing sector and last year comprised 1,327 companies employing 20 or more workers involved in the production of motor vehicles and auto parts, according to the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis).

The industry generated sales totalling 407 billion euros (478 billion dollars) last year with 63 per cent of the amount (257 billion euros) acquired from overseas, said Destatis.

Germany‘s car industry employs about 828,000 workers, which corresponds to 14 per cent of the country‘s manufacturing industry workforce.

The number of diesel-powered passenger vehicles on German roads has been declining in recent years, particularly in the wake of Volkswagen‘s admission in September 2015 that it had installed devices to cheat emissions tests in more than 11 million vehicles around the world.

The share of diesel vehicles included in the total of new German car registrations fell last year to less than 45 per cent - the lowest level in five years - and could fall below 40 per cent in 2017, according to the nation‘s Center Automotive Research (CAR).
