London (dpa) - Finsbury Park Mosque, close to the site of the van attack in north London, became notorious over a decade ago when it was led by preacher Abu Hamza al-Masri.

His extremist ideology and fiery speeches led to the shutting of the mosque in 2003 and his arrest. He was convicted two years later on charges of inciting murder and racial hatred.

The Egypt-born preacher, an instantly recognizable figure with one glass eye and a prosthetic hook instead of his right hand, was later extradited to the United States and convicted in 2014, this time on terrorism charges.

The association with terrorism remains a stain on the mosque‘s reputation years later.

The mosque continued to receive hate mail even in 2014, after Hamza‘s conviction in the US, according to its chairman since 2005, Mohammed Kozbar.

"London‘s Finsbury Park Mosque where hate cleric Abu Hamza once preached" is how tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail first headlined the attack early on Monday.

Since it was reopened in 2005, however, the mosque - which was first founded in 1994 - has undergone a transformation.

"Since February 2005, with the support of the local Muslim community, the mosque has been run by a new board of trustees with a new management team, new imams, a new name and new ethos," the mosque says on its website.

"We have a new era since 2005," Kozbar has said. "Back then the atmosphere was not a healthy one, it was hostile to the community."

As part of the mosque‘s new direction it has held meetings with establishment figures and held interfaith meetings and anti-hate-crime discussions.

In June 2016 and again this year, current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - who is the local member of parliament and sometimes used the building to meet constituents - as well as local police officers attended the iftar, or breaking fast, meal during Ramadan at the mosque.

Corbyn, as well Prime Minister Theresa May, visited the mosque on Monday after the terrorist attack.

"Radical hotbed transformed to model of community relations," is how the conservative broadsheet Daily Telegraph described the mosque on Monday.
