Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - The Winter Olympics have gotten off to an "outstanding" start after the Russian doping saga was solved just in time for the Games, and scenes between North Korean and South Korean athletes and politicians also sending a strong signal.

That was the assessment of International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach in an interview during his visit to the dpa office at the Pyeongchang Games on Monday.

"These Games got off to an outstanding start" and conveyed the message of sport, "a message of dialogue, understanding and peace through the joint march of the two Korean teams," Bach said.

Bach named the presence of North Korean athletes and officials "a signal" but insisted that "sport can‘t create peace, that is up to the politicians."

A high-ranking North Korean delegation led by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the nation‘s leader Kim Jong Un, visited the Games and had talks with South Korean President Moon Jae In. Kim - the first member of the ruling family to visit South Korea since the 1953 truce - extending an invitation to Moon to come to Pyongyang for a summit.

Bach meanwhile also expressed relief that all cases of Russian appealing exclusion from the Games over doping practices were ended on the morning of the opening ceremony by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Russians present in Pyeongchang are competing as neutrals.

"We wanted this issue settled. Unfortunately it wasn‘t possible earlier," Bach said, adding he didn‘t want to predict whether the suspension of Russia‘s Olympic Committee would be lifted for the closing ceremony because that was down to the IOC executive board.
