Austrian far right lists demands for joining government

By our dpa-correspondent and Europe Online    auf Facebook posten  Auf Twitter posten
Vienna (dpa) - The far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) signalled Wednesday a government coalition with Austria‘s conservatives is its preferred option, while listing a row of issues it wants to implement in a rightist cabinet.

With 26 per cent of the votes, the FPOe has emerged as the king-maker from Sunday‘s parliamentary election, as the deep rift between the previous government parties - the social democrats and the conservatives - makes a new centrist cabinet unlikely.

Conservative People‘s Party (OeVP) chief Sebastian Kurz, who won the election, should now start negotiating with the FPOe, far-right leader Heinz-Christian Strache told a press conference in Vienna.

Strache made clear, however, that his party would not compromise on its key positions.

"We‘ll not go down on our knees for anyone," he said.

Strache cited tough national border controls, expulsion of criminal foreigners and "stopping the Islamization that has been spreading in our country" as key items on his agenda, along with income tax cuts and policies to boost the economy.

On all of these issues, FPOe and OeVP have been largely in agreement.

However, the FPOe chief also called for giving people more say in national politics, by lowering the bar for plebiscites. The OeVP also supports more direct democracy, but not to the extent of the FPOe.

The OeVP plan to expand communications surveillance is another friction point, Strache made clear when he warned against excessive police powers.

Strache reiterated his demand that security issues should be handled by an FPOe interior minister.
