Austria reopens bidding process for carrier Niki

Vienna (dpa) - An Austrian court launched a second insolvency proceeding for carrier Niki on Friday, reopening the bidding for the subsidiary of the failed Air Berlin.

So far, a German insolvency manager had been responsible for handling the Vienna-based subsidiary of the German budget carrier.

In December, the International Airlines Group (IAG), which operates British Airways and Iberia, had emerged as the winning bidder for Niki, offering 20 million euros (23 million dollars) as a sales price, as well as additional funding totalling 16.5 million euros.

Friday‘s decision by a court in Korneuburg near Vienna allows previously unsuccessful bidders to make new offers until January 19, a court spokesman said. German carrier Tuifly, British travel group Thomas Cook and airline entrepreneur Niki Lauda had originally lost out to IAG.

Former Formula One champion Niki Lauda founded Niki in 2003 and sold it to the Air Berlin group in 2011.

Niki‘s German insolvency manager Lucas Floether disagreed with the Austrian court decision to start additional proceedings.

"The launch runs counter to the European Insolvency Regulation," his spokesman said.

Niki had been employing 1,000 people. IAG was planning to take over 750 of them.
