Australian swimming upbeat about first day Olympic success

Sydney (dpa) - Australia‘s national swimming federation and former swimming stars reacted positively on Sunday to the country‘s turnaround in fortunes in the pool at Rio.

Olympic debutante Mack Horton won the first gold medal for Australia on day one in the 400m freestyle. Shortly after, the team of Cate and Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie set a new world record in the 4x100 meter women‘s freestyle with a time of 3:30.65.

"Our team experienced a sensational night in the pool on Day 1 of the Rio Olympics," Swimming Australia said in a statement on its website.

"The pressure on this (relay) team was immense, with them being almost unbackable favourites, but races don‘t win themselves and they delivered when it counted," the swimming organisation said.

Jenny Campbell, the mother of Cate and Bronte Campbell, called the win "unbelievably special."

"It almost seems unbelievable that I have two daughters who stood at the top of the podium at the Olympic Games doing what they used to talk about doing 15 years ago as young swimmers," she told local broadcaster Channel Seven on Sunday.

Former world champion swimmers also weighed in with their best wishes after the performances. Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe tweeted that "our swimmers have delivered and then some on day 1! Congrats."

Former medley swimmer Leisel Jones described Australia‘s first day gold medal winners as "legends" on the social media site.

Australia has already won more gold medals in the pool than at the last Olympics in London in 2012 altogether. There the country‘s swimmers won just a solitary gold medal, which also went to the 4x100 meter women‘s relay team, in what was generally considered a poor showing by fans and sports administrators alike.
