Australian Olympic hurdles champion Pearson to miss Rio Games

Sydney (dpa) - Olympic 100 metres hurdles champion Sally Pearson has said she will miss the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Games with a torn hamstring.

Pearson told the Nine Network Wednesday she sustained the injury during training on Monday and that although she could theoretically compete in Rio August 5-21 she would be nowhere near the top level.

"I‘m disappointed and I‘m gutted," she said. "Unfortunately, it is the biggest sporting event in the world that I am going to be missing out on and I can‘t be a part of. It‘s devastating."

Pearson won Olympic gold in 2012 in London and a silver in 2008 in Beijing. She also has a gold and a silver from world championships.

She only recently returned to competition from a year on the sidelines owing to a broken wrist and other injuries.
