Australia 'disappointed' at Russian expulsion of diplomats

Sydney (dpa) - Australia‘s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said it was "disappointing although not unexpected" that Russia decided to expel two Australian diplomats in retaliation for the expulsion of two Russian diplomats from Canberra.

In a joint statement with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Turnbull said the staff expelled from Moscow were fulfilling their diplomatic and consular functions and there was no justification for the action by Russia.

"Together with many nations, including our closest allies, Australia stands with the United Kingdom as we condemn the outrageous use of a banned Russian nerve agent on British soil, in the first chemical weapons attack in Europe since World War II," Turnbull said.

"The Russian Government must explain how a military-grade nerve agent developed by Russia was used in the UK, endangering the lives of hundreds of people."
