Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Australia‘s Marcus Fraser continues to lead the men‘s Olympic golf tournament after round two in Rio de Janeiro Friday but brilliant rounds from Thomas Pieters and Henrik Stenson moved them into contention.

Fraser leads on 10-under for the tournament after his two-under 69 left him one shot ahead of Belgium‘s Pieters and two better than Swede Stenson.

"If someone had told me I would be in this position at the start of the week I would have told them to go somewhere," Fraser said after his second under-par round of the week following a dazzling 63 Thursday.

And Fraser‘s round could have been even stronger had he not bogeyed two holes on the back nine to allow others to close the gap.

Pieters fired a 66 and Open Champion Stenson a 67 on a day which offered low scoring despite wet conditions, highlighted by New Zealander Danny Lee‘s 65 which took him to five-under for the competition.

Lee returned home in 31 and finished in sensational form with four consecutive birdies.

Former US Open champion Justin Rose is six-under, tied for fourth with France‘s Gregory Bourdy and will also fancy his chances of a medal.

"They certainly don‘t give anything out today, so all you can do is put yourself (in a position) where you are going to struggle. I feel like I haven‘t done that," said Rose, who made history with the first-ever Olympic hole-in-one Thursday.

"I feel like I have another gear or two to try and find and it‘ll be nice if it all clicks into shape when you need it."

Unlike normal Tour events, the Rio golf does not contain a cut meaning everyone will play at the weekend. Major winners Bubba Watson, Padraig Harrington, Danny Willet and Martin Kaymer range from six to 11 shots behind Fraser but have time to fight back over Saturday and Sunday.
