Ankara criticizes Austrian call to halt Turkey's EU accession

Istanbul (dpa) - The new Austrian government‘s call for an end to Turkey‘s accession negotiations with the European Union is "unfortunate and shortsighted," the Turkish foreign ministry said on Sunday.

Austria‘s new coalition government of conservative and right-wing parties cited in their programme an effort to end the EU accession negotiations with Turkey and to look for allies for this purpose.

The foreign ministry said such initiatives were "far from being friendly" and risk "losing the friendship of Turkey."

The statements come amid stalled talks over Turkey‘s accession to the EU and an expansion of the customs union between the two as diplomatic ties have become increasingly tense.

"Austria should draw lessons from recent history. Instead of seeking for allies to end Turkey‘s negotiations, it should seek allies to establish strong relations with Turkey," Turkish EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik said on his Twitter account on Sunday.
