Aldi slammed by Australian government over milk aid

Sydney (dpa) - German-owned supermarket giant Aldi was slammed by the Australian government Monday for failing to join a milk aid programme for drought-stricken dairy farmers.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said Aldi had done "bugger all" to help dairy farmers by not applying a suggested 10-cent-a- litre surcharge on discounted milk.

"They‘ve [Aldi] done bugger all, they‘ve done nothing, they won‘t ever come to the party and help the dairy industry," Littleproud told the national broadcaster ABC on Monday.

"Aldi basically just turned around and said ‘go and jam it‘. Well, you know what, we should say to the big German ‘you go and jam it‘.

"The reality is they‘re not interested in the dairy industry here in Australia. They‘ve done nothing, they‘ve done bugger all, and it‘s time the Australian consumer looked at Aldi and what they‘ve done."

Littleproud also criticized supermarket rivals Coles and Woolworths for failing to add the surcharge on supermarket branded discount milk that would be intended to be passed on to dairy farmers by milk suppliers.

Discounted supermarket brand milk sells for a dollar a litre - often less than it costs dairy farmers to produce the milk. Many dairy farmers are struggling to survive in the current drought.

Littleproud said the scheme had become a farce as the increase had only been added to Coles three-litre milk containers.

Aldi has yet to respond to the comments.
