After Rio rebuff, star pole vaulter Isinbayeva targets top job

Rio de Janeiro/Moscow (dpa) - Pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva is expected in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday with her immediate targets readjusted after her fight to compete at the Olympics was thwarted.

Isinbayeva is expected in Rio to seek support in the athletes‘ commission election, while she has also confirmed she wants to run for president of the Russian Athletic Federation.

Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, was banned from this year‘s Olympics along with dozens of other Russian track-and-field athletes amid far-reaching allegations of a state-sponsored doping programme.

Another bid to compete at the Rio Olympics was rejected by the Swiss Federal Tribunal on Monday. Isinbayeva and 100-metre hurdler Sergey Shubenkov had tried to seek a provisional ruling from the court in order to compete in Rio where the athletics competition started on Friday.

Isinbayev, 34, has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and has condemned the Olympic ban.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said earlier this week she would receive an accreditation for the athletes‘ village as she is not suspected of a doping offence and has the right to be a candidate in the election for the athletes‘ commission.

She is also looking at running to head her country‘s athletics federation.

"I want to try. I think I can do it as my reputation makes it possible for me to take charge of the federation," she said in comments carried by Russian state news agency TASS on Thursday.

"I want our athletes to compete at international competitions. It will be a big motivation for me and a kind of compensation for my lost possibility to compete at Rio to see Russian athletes again among the sporting elite."
