AfD lawmaker calls for end of Holocaust cobblestone memorials

Stuttgart (dpa) - A lawmaker for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has called for an end to a cobblestone memorial programme for victims of the Holocaust.

The gold-coloured, cobblestone-sized monuments called "stolpersteine" (stumbling stones) are laid into the pavement in front of the last known residence of a Nazi victim.

The south-west city of Singen is planning to place three such memorials for Ernst Thaelmann, the former leader of the Communist Party of Germany, and his family.

"There are more appropriate ways to remember using memorials," Wolfgang Gedeon said in an open plea to the mayor of the city on his website.

"The initiators of the memorials are trying to force a certain remembrance culture on their fellow men," said the member of parliament in the south-west German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, where Singen is located.

The name, birthdate and fate of the person is inscribed on the block, which sits just above the regular street level. More than 60,000 of the memorials can be found across Germany and Europe.

Nazi Germany murdered 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, along with homosexuals, Roma, the disabled, political opponents and others.
