Tel Aviv (dpa) - The Palestinian Authority declared a national day of mourning on Saturday after at least 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops during a mass protest in the Gaza Strip the previous day.

The UN has called for an independent investigation into the deaths, which Israel says occurred when its soldiers were responding to rioting.

More than 1,400 people were injured, including from live ammunition, shelling and tear gas, during mass marches near the Gaza Strip border for the rights of Palestinian refugees unable to return to their homes in present-day Israel.

Funerals were taking place in Gaza for those killed in the largest single-day casualty rate in the enclave for a number of years. In the West Bank, shop owners closed in certain areas to mark the mourning day.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Israel has full responsibility for the deaths.

However, Israeli officials accused the Islamist Hamas movement that rules Gaza of engaging in deliberate provocations.

Israel‘s Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Saturday that soldiers acted with "professionalism and determination just as we expected them to" and slammed those demanding an inquiry as "hypocrites."

Later on Saturday the Israeli army said at least eight of those killed were members of Hamas‘ militant wing and two others were members of other militant groups in Gaza.

Hamas‘ said that five of those killed were members of its organization and that they had marched "shoulder to shoulder" with the demonstrators, but did not indicate that they were carrying weapons at the time.

"They sacrificed themselves," the statement from Hamas‘s al-Qassam Brigades said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a vocal supporter of Palestinians condemned on Saturday what he described as a "massacre" carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip this week.

"We will continue to expose Israeli terror all the time and on all platforms," Erdogan told supporters in Istanbul, describing Friday‘s events as an "inhumane attack."

A video taken by a Palestinian cameraman, and picked up by Israeli media outlets, showed an 18-year-old Palestinian being shot in the back as he ran away from the border area.

Without referring to any specific video, the Israeli military said there were clips being distributed which were edited or fabricated. "Don‘t take Hamas‘s propaganda as fact," a statement said.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply concerned" and called for an independent investigation into the deaths following an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Friday in New York.

According to the Israeli army spokesman, around 30,000 Palestinians participated in the march, the vast majority of whom were women and children. Palestinians placed the number of participants higher.

On Saturday, 35 Palestinians were injured by Israeli live fire as smaller protestes continued along the border, Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qedra said.

The 1948 Arab-Israeli War created a mass exodus of Palestinians from what is now Israel. Many today live in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and neighbouring countries, as Israel does not allow them to return.

The Gaza Strip faces an increasingly dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by a blockade of the coastal enclave administered by Israel and Egypt for more than a decade, since Hamas, which does not recognize the Jewish State, came to power.

Friday‘s "Great March of Return" kicked off a six-week-long border protest.

The Israeli military‘s Chief of Staff Gadi Eiskenkot said he expected tensions to persist in the coming weeks as Israel prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of its founding on May 14. The Palestinian protests are set to culminate on May 15.
