Paris (dpa) - Paris police Thursday said they had arrested 41 people after far-leftists rioted at the scene of a human resources conference in the city‘s Bois de Boulogne forest park.

Some 80 far-leftist activists, 30 of them hooded, burned three cars, threw projectiles at police and tried to break into a sports facility, police said.

A conference for human resources directors was being conducted in the Pre Catelan restaurant and conference centre in the park.

According to the conference programme, Labour Minister Muriel Penicaud was due to speak on Thursday morning about the implications of President Emmanuel Macron‘s reforms to France‘s labour laws.

News agency Agence France-Presse quoted her office as saying that she had been unable to attend due to an urgent commitment not related to the protest.

The reforms, which Macron signed into effect last month, are meant to encourage employers to create more jobs by making the labour code more flexible.

Among other measures, they allow staff and employers to agree on a wider range of working conditions locally in individual businesses, instead of at national or sectoral level.

The reforms have been opposed by trade unions and the radical left, which fear they will weaken workers‘ bargaining power.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators marched against the reforms in two days of protests last month, although strikes called by the hardline CGT union confederation had limited impact.
