Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Games organizers postponed the women‘s slalom event on Wednesday morning as strong winds continue to plague the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The two-run event at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre was initially scheduled to start at 10.15 am (0115 GMT) but was later put back to 11.45 am as strong winds whipped across the course. It was eventually called off, and will now be held on Friday.

The postponement means US medal favourite Mikaela Shiffrin is yet to compete in an event at the Games, after the women‘s giant slalom was also affected by winds on Monday. That event, together with the men‘s downhill, have already been moved to Thursday.

US women‘s alpine team coach Paul Kristofic said that although postponement was the safest and fairest option, changing race dates were "challenging" for his athletes.

"You‘ve got to get ready physically for a race like this, it starts early in the morning, and then the pyschological aspect of performing at the biggest event of the year," he said.

"All that takes time and energy and everyone‘s a little bummed out when a day like this happens. But they do happen, so we are quite used to it."

On Wednesday, International Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Adams again said he wasn‘t concerned about winds delaying alpine events.

"There are plenty of reserve days," he said. "If the wind continues blowing for the next 15 days, we may have a problem."

Shiffrin, who is currently the overall leader in the women‘s World Cup, is aiming to add to her sole slalom gold medal in 2014. The 22-year-old is expected to compete in a number of alpine events in Pyeongchang.

Friday‘s race times will be announced later on Wednesday, officials said. A men‘s super-g is also set for Friday after being moved back a day.
