2ND LEAD No fourth gold for Biles; Brazil's Zanetti pushed into silver By Derek Wilson, dpa

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - American superstar Simone Biles missed out on a fourth Rio gold medal Monday due to a costly stumble on the balance beam while Brazil‘s reigning Olympic champion Arthur Zanetti had to settle for silver on the rings.

Biles had already won team, all-around and vault golds but the balance beam is not her strongest discipline. She lost her balance following a forward somersault and touching the beam with her hands reduced her performance score to 8.233 for a total of 14.733.

That opened the door for Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands, who produced a stunning performances on a slightly more difficult routine than Biles to score a winning 15.466.

"The final was just nerve-wracking," Wevers said. "The plan was to go all-out, but then I saw Simone making mistakes. She didn‘t fall off, but she definitely lost some points.

"After seeing her score, I knew I had to change my strategy. I went all-out, but also with the thought that I would go for execution rather than just difficulty.

"The combination of both is crucial. It is something that I decide myself."

Biles was subsequently pushed down to bronze by team-mate Laurie Hernandez who scored 15.333, but has a chance at another gold on the floor on Tuesday.

"I‘m not disappointed in the medal that I received because anyone would love to have a bronze at an Olympic Games," Biles said. "I‘m disappointed in the routine that I did. Not so much the entire routine just the front tuck I guess, because the rest of the routine was pretty good."

Zanetti became a national hero in Brazil when he triumphed four years ago and was considered a strong medal hope for the Brazilians this time round.

With both he and Greek Eleftherios Petrounias choosing routines with the same difficulty, it came down to execution. The Greek edged this 9.200 to 8.966 for a winning total of 16.000 but Zanetti still received rapturous round of applause for earning the Games‘ hosts a rare medal but a third in gymnastics.

Russia‘s Denis Abliazin won bronze off a similar routine with China‘s Liu Yang losing a gamble on a harder set. He failed to deliver the performance required and finished fourth.

"I‘m feeling much happier than I was in London due to the fact that I‘m competing at home," Zanetti said.

"My team-mates brought home two medals here and now I‘m adding the third one. I think gymnastics will be more popular in Brazil. I hope [the funding] will be better, and we will fight for that to make it happen."

The men‘s vault title went to North Korean Ri Se Gwang with an average score of 15.691 while Abliazin collected his second medal of the day, this time a silver, in 15.516. Bronze went to Japan‘s Kenzo Shirai.

"It does not mean anything to me. It is a gift that I present to my country," Ri said. "I think it will bring a sense of victory and courage to my country."
