Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Canadian figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir made sure of ice dance gold at the Winter Olympics to add to their 2010 victory in Vancouver and silver four years ago in Sochi.

The three-time world champions now have a record-equalling third Olympic gold and a record five medals in all after already winning in the team event at the Pyeongchang Games.

The longstanding pair, who had led with a record score after the short dance, finished with a world‘s best total 206.07 points after Tuesday‘s free dance in which they performed to the music of "Moulin Rouge" to a rapturous reception in the Gangneung Ice Arena.

Silver went to Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France on 205.28 and bronze to US brother and sister pair Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani on 187.69.

Virtue, 28, and Moir, 30, who were the Canadian flagbearers at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Games, embraced and gave themselves high fives on the rink before an anxious wait for the judges‘ scores.

"Amazing. It was a special moment to come out last. It was a strong last group, there was a lot of pressure, but I‘m so happy with how we performed," Virtue said.

After finishing behind US pair Meryl Davis and Charlie White in Sochi four years ago, they had retired from the sport but returned ahead of the 2016/17 figure skating season.

"Extremely different this time," Moir said on the difference to winning their first gold in 2010:

"Obviously, 2010 we were in our own country. Those are moments we will never forget," he said.

"But eight years later we‘re completely different people, we‘re completely different athletes.

"We still love what we do. It‘s personal this time. It was for each other, we skated with each other in mind the whole way and we skated with our hearts. It‘s extremely fulfilling."

Papadakis and Cizeron topped the segment with a record-breaking 123.35 dancing to a rendition of "Moonlight Sonata," just ahead of the Canadians‘ on 122.40, to secure the silver.

"There are a lot of emotions right now," Cizeron said. "We really did the best we could out there. It was almost the perfect performance. We‘re just really proud of that."

There was disappointment for US pair Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, who were marked fifth in the free dance to slip to fourth after lying third after Monday‘s segment.

The Shibutani siblings meanwhile moved up from fourth top clinch the bronze medal.

"It feels like gold. It‘s unbelievable," Alex Shibutani said. "I was really proud of how we skated today. We knew that regardless of what the result was going to be we did everything that we could and have no regrets."
