Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Switzerland defeated Canada 7-5 to win the bronze medal in men‘s curling on Friday and leave the Canadians without a medal in either the men‘s or women‘s competition for the first time since the sport returned to the Winter Olympics in 1998.

It was a fourth men‘s curling medal for Switzerland, who won gold in Nagano in 1998 and bronze in both 2002 and 2010.

Canada had been the dominant force in men‘s curling since it was reintroduced to the Games in Nagano, when they were beaten by the Swiss in the final. Since then have followed a silver in 2002 and three golds in a row in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

"[I] feel bad for everybody that‘s put in a lot of hard work for us to get here and sacrificed a lot," Canada‘s Ben Hebert said. "You know we didn‘t deliver here this week."

Switzerland‘s Peter de Cruz felt that his team forcing Canada into errors had proved decisive.

"[We were] very fortunate that maybe they didn‘t play their absolute best game and we had a pretty good game, so that was enough to win it," he said.

"We wanted to make them throw some difficult shots, some shots to win the game, some shots to stay in the game and I think we did that."

Canada‘s women, gold medallists in 2014 and 1998, had failed to make the last four for the first time since women‘s curling made its Games debut in 1998.

However, Canada did win gold in the new mixed-doubles format, introduced to the Games for the first time in Pyeongchang.

The United States and Sweden will meet in the men‘s final on Saturday, while Sweden will take on South Korea in the women‘s final on Sunday.

Sweden outclassed Britain 10-5 in their semi-final while hosts South Korea saw off Japan 8-7 after an extra end.

Britain meet Japan for bronze on Sunday hoping to match their third-place finish from four years ago in Sochi.

"We‘ve trained hard for the last three or four years, but we were just outplayed," British skip Eve Muirhead said. "We‘ve still got a medal to play for tomorrow so we‘ll be going hard for that."
