Bratislava (dpa) - Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will face a no-confidence motion next Monday, parliament decided on Tuesday, putting his three-party coalition on the brink of collapse.

The no-confidence motion was submitted by opposition liberal Freedom and Solidarity party.

The Most-Hid party, the smallest in the Slovak coalition, had earlier threatened to step out of the alliance if the other parties don‘t agree to their demand for early elections over the handling of the double murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee.

Most-Hid party said in a resolution that new elections were necessary to resolve the crisis triggered by the slaying two weeks ago. The demand came in spite of Interior Minister Robert Kalinak‘s resignation on Monday.

Without Most-Hid, Fico‘s Smer-SD and the far-right Slovak National Party may not be able to survive the no-confidence motion.

Fico forged the governing coalition after elections in 2016.

Kalinak stepped down after tens of thousands of people demonstrated Friday against Social Democrat Robert Fico‘s government and asked for an efficient investigation of Kuciak‘s murder.

The protest was the largest since the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe nearly three decades ago.

The journalist, focused on investigating corruption, had been preparing a story on links between the Italian Mafia and people close to Fico, who dismissed the allegations.

The unfinished report was published after the killings on February 26. Kuciak, 27, and his fiancee were shot and killed in their home.
