Pyeongchang, South Korea - Skip John Shuster led the US to their first ever Olympic curling gold medal on Saturday, defeating Sweden 10-7 at the Gangneung Curling Centre.

The US team, watched on by White House adviser Ivanka Trump, gained a crucial advantage in the eighth end as they claimed five points to charge to a 10-5 lead.

Sweden were able to claw two back in the ninth, but then conceded in the 10th and final end, as the US once again had the two closest stones to the house and the Swedes ran out of rocks.

"We came out here with great intensity and just had to believe we could do it, and make our shots," Shuster‘s team-mate Matt Hamilton said.

"It was a good game, I have no complaints about it. I‘m just happy we were able to start strong and not allow them to get away from us early."

The win was the fifth in a row for the US men‘s team in the tournament, after they accounted for 2014 gold medal winners Canada in their semi-final on Thursday.

The US started slowly in the Olympic round robin tournament, being thumped by Sweden 10-4 and Japan 8-2, but improved when it mattered most.

"It‘s unbelievable, this whole last four years," Hamilton said. "Just being on the cusp at the world championships. Getting bronze one year, coming fourth and fifth the other two years.

"We knew we were close, and to make the breakthrough here at the Olympics is just amazing."

The women‘s bronze medal game between Great Britain and Japan is due to start at 8.05 pm (1105 GMT), with the gold medal to be decided on Sunday when South Korea take on Sweden.
