Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - The Netherlands‘ Kjeld Nuis claimed gold in the men‘s 1,000-metre speed skating in Pyeongchang on Friday, adding to the 1,500m gold he won on Tuesday to become only the third man to win both events at a single Olympic Winter Games.

Nuis clocked 1 minute 7.95 seconds to seal victory by just four-hundredths of a second from Norway‘s Havard Lorentzen to seal a seventh speed-skating gold at the Games for the dominant Dutch.

South Korea‘s Kim Tae Yun, who took bronze, had previously sent the home crowd into raptures as he briefly led.

Nuis said this win had produced quite a different reaction than his 1,500m victory: "Relief. The 1,500 was a victory and this, relief. I was psyched to get this one."

The 28-year-old had been made uneasy by a false start. "After the false start my skate was not good in the ice. I put it in and the ice broke so I thought, ‘Shit.‘ It wasn‘t good.

"But then my first 200m was perfect. The inner corner was not so good, I had to step over the line or I would have been DQ [disqualified]."

Nuis‘s win sees him emulate America‘s Eric Heiden and Canada‘s Gaetan Boucher, who won both 1,000m and 1,500m gold in 1980 and 1984 respectively.

Norway‘s Lorentzen was disappointed not to add to Monday‘s surprise gold in the 500m. "It was a good race, but it wasn‘t my perfect race and that‘s a little bit disappointing," he said. "But I am super happy to have a silver medal."

And South Korean Kim was ecstatic after his bronze-medal run set the crowd alight.

"It is like a dream, I didn‘t do well in the World Cups this year. I think all my hard work paid off," he said. "It is still like a dream. I am so happy. [The crowd] helped me a lot, the more they cheered me on, [the more] I could feel my body getting lighter."
