New York (dpa) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened an exhibition on Jerusalem at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, nearly three months after the UN rejected US recognition of the city as Israel‘s capital.

Netanyahu met with US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley - who he praised as "Hurricane Haley" - before inaugurating the exhibition titled "3,000 Years of History: Jews in Jerusalem."

In response to a sign at the entrance that said the display doesn‘t represent the United Nations, Netanyahu said the exhibit "represents the truth."

"Of course it doesn‘t represent the United Nations," Netanyahu said.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution on December 21 asking the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital.

"We are changing Israel‘s position in the world and above all we are making it clear that we fight for the truth and for our rights," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu said Israel has not walked away from peace negotiations with Palestine, and accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of running away from talks.

But UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is "extremely concerned" at the lack of progress in the peace process, his spokesman told reporters Thursday.

The lack of direct talks, ongoing violence and latest reports from the UN‘s special coordinator for Middle East peace Nikolay Mladenov "paint a fairly bleak picture," spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

The visit came days after Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump, who said he is considering travelling to Israel for the planned opening in May of the new US embassy there.

The status of Jerusalem has been one of the most sensitive and explosive issues in the decades-long conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Israel has long claimed Jerusalem as its "undivided capital," while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.

Israel occupied the eastern half of Jerusalem in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognized.
