1ST LEAD Macron and Netanyahu meet to remember Holocaust in Paris By Claudia Kornmeier, dpa

Paris (dpa) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Paris on Sunday to remember the largest mass deportation of Jews from France during World War II.

The so-called Vel d‘Hiv round-up of Jews on July 16 and 17, 1942, led to the detention of some 13,000 Jews in a velodrome in the city centre and their subsequent deportation to concentration camps built by Nazi Germany further east.

Among those detained were 4,000 children.

The deportation was a taboo subject for decades after the war in France, and the government first accepted responsibility in 1995.

Macron said that "France had certainly organized" the round-up and deportations. "Not a single German" participated in it, he said, an apparent reference to statements made by Marine Le Pen without mentioning the right-wing populist politician by name.

Le Pen, the presidential candidate from the extremist National Front party, had said shortly before the election that France was not responsible for the round-up, reasoning that the Vichy government which allied with Nazi Germany was "not France."

Netanyahu called his invitation to the event a "very strong gesture," although the visit had attracted some controversy, with critics saying that it would politicize the event on the 75th anniversary.

After the ceremonies, the two leaders met for their first face-to-face talks in the Elysee Palace. Among the subjects of discussions was the Middle East conflict.

Macron called for a resumption of negotiations over a two-state solution, saying, "France is prepared to support all diplomatic efforts going in this direction."
