Washington (dpa) - Secretary of State John Kerry will lead the US delegation to the Olympic opening ceremony this week in Rio de Janeiro, the White House said Tuesday.

Nine-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Mark Spitz will be part of the presidential delegation, along with several US diplomats and White House officials.

US President Barack Obama will not attend the Games.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was set to New York to take part in the opening of the Games on Friday, including participating in a relay to hand over the Olympic Touch, said Stephane Dujarric, Ban‘s spokesman.

During his visit to Rio, Ban will attend a meeting with heads of state and will also meet with the Refugee Olympic Team, Dujarric added.
