Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Weightlifter Kianoush Rostami set a new world record of 396 kilograms in his 85kg weight class Friday, securing Iran their first medal and their first gold at the 2016 Rio Games.

Rostami had set the previous record of 395kg himself in May in Iran.

In Rio de Janeiro, China‘s Tian Tao also lifted 395kg and won silver.

Lagging 6kg behind the winner, Gabriel Sincraian secured bronze for Romania.

Female athlete Rim Jong Sim carried away the first gold medal for North Korea in Rio by winning in the 75kg class.

"I was really overwhelmed with happiness that I won this gold medal so I can send this honour to my leader," she said, referring North Korean Communist leader Kim Jong Un.

Rim repeated her gold performance from the 2012 London Games, where she competed in the 69kg class.

The North Korean athlete snatched 121 kilograms and managed 153kg in the clean and jerk, for a winning total of 274kg.

Bulgaria‘s Darya Naumava lifted 258kg for silver, 1kg ahead of Spanish bronze medallist Lidia Valentin Perez.

"I could have done better," Rim said about her 16kg-lead.
