Beijing/Tehran (dpa) - Iranian President Hassan Rowhani has said that no one can undermine the 2015 nuclear deal, not even Donald Trump, after the US leader threatened to withdraw from the agreement if its "terrible flaws" were not fixed.

Warning Trump against torpedoing the hard-won international agreement, Rowhani on Sunday described it as "an outstanding diplomatic achievement that no one can easily undermine."

Trump‘s attempts to do so will only isolate the United States internationally, Rowhani said, adding that a government loses credibility if it disregards or changes agreements made by its predecessors.

The 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by the US under the Obama administration as well as Iran, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

It is aimed at ensuring Iran uses its nuclear capabilities for peaceful purposes while preventing it from gaining nuclear weapons. In exchange, economic sanctions on it were lifted.

Rowhani said that international reactions to Trump‘s efforts to undermine the deal reflect "the victory of political decency" over the current US administration.

China said that the agreement, which did "not come by easily" must be respected and that all relevant parties should "bear the larger picture and long-term interest in mind."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in a statement on Saturday that the deal was key to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East and that it was China‘s "consistent and clear-cut position" to oppose unilateral sanctions.

Trump on Friday threatened to withdraw from the agreement if what he called its "disastrous flaws" were not fixed. He also imposed fresh sanctions on 14 entities and individuals the US accuses of human rights violations.

Iran has rejected any renegotiation of the treaty.
