Cologne (dpa) - Hundreds of people took to the streets of several German cities late Sunday to protest against the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which will enter federal parliament for the first time following national elections.

About 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside a nightclub on Berlin‘s Alexanderplatz square where the AfD was celebrating its electoral result.

The protesters shouted "Get out, get out!" and "AfD, racist scum!"

Police said the situation was relaxed despite individuals having thrown a bottle and eggs.

Several hundred people also gathered for a spontaneous protest in the eastern city of Leipzig. Other protests were reported in Cologne, Hamburg and Frankfurt.

The Cologne rally, with some 400 participants, was part of a nationwide campaign dubbed "Nationalism is not an Alternative."

Online, the hashtag #fckafd was among the top five topics trending on German Twitter for part of the evening.

Those who did not support the AfD, which gained 13 per cent of the vote, used the hashtag #87Prozent (#87percent) to underscore the fact that they had instead cast their vote for one of the mainstream parties.
