Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Germany‘s Thomas Dressen set the opening pace Tuesday in the first half of the men‘s combined event at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Dressen set off first in the downhill segment of the competition, finishing in 1 minute 19.24 seconds, a time that was never beaten.

"That was cool," Dressen said. You always want to be on the leaderboard. Now we just need to get ready for the slalom."

"I simply implemented my plan from top to bottom, and obviously it wasn‘t a bad one."

On a shortened course due to winds, Norwegian veteran Aksel Lund Svindal got close to Dressen in his downhill run, finishing just 0.07 seconds slower.

"The conditions are fast, I think because it‘s a touch harder but also more bumpy," Svindal said.

"This wind has polished everything a little bit. The wind is on and off, some are more lucky and others are less lucky."

Austria‘s Matthias Mayer put down the third fastest time in the field of 65 starters, ahead of Svindal‘s countryman Kjetil Jansrud.

Sochi slalom silver medallist Marcel Hirscher is well positioned ahead of the afternoon slalom race, sitting in 12th. The race is scheduled to begin at 3 pm (0600 GMT), also at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre.

In the men‘s combined event, athletes‘ times are added together and the fastest total time determines the winner.

The combined was the first event of the alpine ski programme after both Sunday‘s men‘s downhill and Monday‘s women‘s giant slalom were postponed because of the wind. Both will now take place on Thursday.
