Hamburg (dpa) - A man who served a lengthy prison sentence in Germany for his involvement in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States has been deported to Morocco on completion of his sentence, police at Frankfurt Airport said on Monday

Mounir el-Motassadeq, 44, boarded a Moroccan aeroplane, which left Frankfurt Airport shortly before 6 pm (1600 GMT), bound for Casablanca.

Federal German police officers accompanied him on the flight.

El-Motassadeq was earlier released from a Hamburg prison from where he was taken to the city‘s airport. Images circulated on local media showed him being led away from a helicopter blindfolded.

"Having Mr Motassadeq out of the country gives me a good feeling and for Hamburg draws a line under this chapter," said Andy Grote, a senator for the city-state of Hamburg with the interior portfolio.

El-Motassadeq was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2006 for membership of a terrorist organization and being an accessory to murder for aiding three terrorists who were part of the so-called Hamburg cell, which played a key role in the September 11 attacks.

He was initially supposed to be released in November, but an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said several weeks ago that he would be released early in order to effect the deportation.
