Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - German canoeing coach Stefan Henze suffered life-threatening injuries in a serious traffic accident in Rio de Janeiro, the country‘s Olympic sports confederation (DOSB) said Friday.

The 35-year-old Henze has a "severe" traumatic brain injury and has undergone a surgical intervention, it said.

Henze was headed back to the Olympic village in a taxi with another member of the German slalom canoe team when the accident occurred late Thursday, Rio organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada said.

The other team official, Christian Kaeding, was lightly injured and has been released from hospital, the confederation said.

Both received medical treatment in close consultation with the head doctor of the German Olympic team, chef de mission Michael Vesper said.

Henze used to compete himself, winning silver at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
