Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Brazil declared Friday a day of national mourning for a military police officer who was lethally injured in a shoot-out in a Rio de Janeiro favela.

Pictures of the incident showed a bullet-riddled police vehicle, blood, and a man lying on the ground.

Officer Helio Vieira, 35, died of his injury late Thursday, Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said on his Facebook page.

Brazilian interim President Michel Temer declared a national mourning and said that Vieira had died in an operation to guarantee security during the Olympic Games.

Vieira was with two officers when their vehicle came under fire Wednesday at the Mare complex north, some nine kilometres from Rio‘s international airport. Two other officers were slightly injured.

The security situation in Mare has been tense for weeks, as drug gangs have been clashing with police.

Mario Andrada, spokesman of the Olympic organizing committee, insisted that Vieira was not on duty at the Games at the time of the incident.

"He was in Rio ... to work for the Games, but at that particular time he was not doing anything directly connected to the Games," he said.

A stray bullet from a favela that targeted a police observation blimp has landed in the Olympic equestrian venue during the Games, followed by a second projectile that police fired when they sought to catch the perpetrator.
