Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Cassie Sharpe painted her nails gold and rapped to hip hop music as she captured victory for Canada in the women‘s halfpipe in freestyle skiing at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday.

Sharpe laid down a best score of 95.80 on the second of her three runs, to beat French veteran Marie Martinod, with Brita Sigourney of the United States taking bronze.

Martonod top scored with 92.60 on her second run while Sigourney was given 91.60 on her last run to edge team-mate Annalisa Drew (90.80).

Sharpe likes to rap to "Ante Up" by US rap duo M.O.P as she competes, and it was no different Tuesday at the Phoenix Snow Park as she went down for her winning run.

"I yelled at myself to do what I already have done and then I just start rapping M.O.P.," she said.

The 25-year-old had explained after qualifying the previous day: "I‘m rapping. I‘m singing a song, just amping myself up. Every run, same song. Riles me up."

As for the gold-painted nails, she said: "I always paint my nails gold before every contest.

"A lot of people have superstitions or things that they have to do. This is not a superstition by any means, but it‘s a habit. And I like to have that on my nails."

At 33, Martinod has won a second consecutive Olympic silver medal after coming back from giving birth in 2009.

"It means I made a good decision to come back, it means I‘ve been working hard and I could do it at the right times," she said.

"It means I‘m leaving this industry with a great message to all the girls: that you can push hard, you can push for a long time, and if you take care of yourself you can do it until you‘re 33 at least.

"And it means - and this is most important - that you can be a woman, you can have kids and you can do it, feel good about it, and come back (to the sport)."

Maddie Bowman of the United States, the Sochi gold medallist four years ago, could meanwhile not land any of her runs and finished last of the 11 starters.

"I‘m really glad I went for it," she said. "I wanted to do the best run of my life, or crash. I‘m not here to throw safety runs. I went for it."
