Magdeburg, Germany (dpa) - A high-profile politician from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Andre Poggenburg, said Thursday he is stepping down from his position as party chairman in the parliament of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Poggenburg admitted he had misjudged a February speech to his electorate in which he called Turks in Germany "camel herders" and "caraway traders" with "no place and no importance."

He said he had not anticipated the "enormous media pressure" that would come about from the speech.

"I must take the fall for that," he said at a state parliamentary session in the central German city of Magdeburg.

The politician lost a secret vote of confidence among his fellow parliamentary group members, dpa has learned. He will now vacate his post by the end of the month.

Citing "pressure" from his own party as the reason for his resignation, Poggenburg said he would continue to work with the parliamentary group.

Together with another state AfD leader, Bjoern Hoecke, Poggenburg founded the far-right nationalist wing of the AfD in 2015.
