Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Brazil have defeated Colombia 2-0 to progress to the semi-finals in Rio and keep their dream of an elusive first Olympic men‘s football gold medal alive.

Neymar struck a long-range free kick into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 12th minute to give the hosts the early lead, after he had drawn the foul 25 yards out.

After the break, Colombia put heavy pressure on the hosts, but Brazil held firm and didn‘t concede in what turned into a hard-fought encounter.

Brazilian striker Luan then struck with a second goal in the 83rd minute, curling the ball over Venezuela‘s goalkeeper Christian Bonilla who had moved off his line.

The tournament hosts will now take on Honduras, who earlier won their quarter-final 1-0 against South Korea, thanks to a lone goal in the 59th minute from Alberth Elis.

Earlier on Saturday, Nigeria defeated Denmark 2-0 in Salvador, thanks to goals by John Obi Mikel (16th minute) and Aminu Umar (59).

Meanwhile, Germany dominated Portugal in the first quarter-final on Saturday in Brasilia, with Serge Gnabry (45th minute), Matthias Ginter (57,) Davie Selke (75) and Philipp Max (87th minute) all scoring.

Both men‘s semi-finals take place next Wednesday, with Nigeria taking on Germany in Sao Paulo, while Brazil play Honduras at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
