Cairo/Brussels (dpa) - Arab foreign ministers will meet next month to discuss means to counter US President Donald Trump‘s decision to recognize the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital.

The Arab ministers will meet in Cairo on February 1 to consider future steps, including the possibility of holding an Arab summit in Jordan, a source at the Arab League said on Wednesday.

The foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco met with Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit in the Jordanian capital Amman last week to discussed the US decision on Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the European Union is to host international talks on the Middle East crisis at the end of January.

The Ad Hoc Liaison Committee, which supports institution building in preparation for Palestinian statehood, will meet in Brussels on January 31.

The meeting was planned at the behest of EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide.

"There is an urgent need to bring all parties together to discuss measures to speed up efforts that can underpin a negotiated two-state solution," the EU said in a statement.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues in the decades-long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and Trump‘s decision on December 6 sparked protests around the world.

Palestinians have since rejected any future role for the US in peace efforts.

Israel claims Jerusalem as its "undivided capital," while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
