Gangneung, South Korea (dpa) - Fifteen-year-old Alina Zagitova won the women‘s figure skating for a first gold medal for the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Friday.

Zagitova beat training partner and two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva, while Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada took bronze.

European champion Zagitova had led 18-year-old Medvedeva after a world‘s best mark in the short programme. Skating third last at the Gangneung Ice Arena to a rendition of "Don Quixote" by composer Leon Minkus, she scored 156.65 points for the performance and 239.57 overall.

Medveda, skating last, was 1.31 points behind overall on 238.26 and Osmond scored 231.02.

"I haven‘t fully realised yet that I‘ve won. I think I need some time to understand that I won the Olympic Games," Zagitova said.

"When I saw the score, I was surprised and it was a nice surprise. I am glad that I was able to deal with my nervousness, go out there and skate my programme calmly."

Zagitova had defeated Medvedeva in the women‘s single skating event at the European championships last month in the only international senior competition they had competed against each other until the Games.

Medveda, who had returned from a foot stress fracture at the end of the year, skated to the soundtrack from the 2012 film version of Leo Tolstoy‘s "Anna Karenina."

"I felt today in my programme really like Anna Karenina in the movie. I put everything out there that I had, I left everything on the ice. I have no regrets," she said.

The two Russian teenagers add to their silvers in the team event, while 22-year-old Osmond follows up a team gold.

At 15 years and 281 days old, Zagitova is the second-youngest Olympic gold medallist in the event after Tara Lipinski of the United States, who won at 15 years and 255 days in 1998.

With Friday‘s figure skating medals, the OAR now have one gold, five silver and eight bronze medals with two days of competition remaining.
